The real life of Lapulapu

Lapulapu was one of two chiefs of Mactan; the other was Zula. His birth and death are unknown. In April 1521 Ferdinand Magellan, allied with Rajah Humabon of Cebu, demanded that he obey Humabon, accept the Spanish king and pay tribute. He refused. On 27 April 1521, Magellan landed on Mactan with about 49 armored men and was killed with several of them; Antonio Pigafetta wrote of about 1,500 defenders. Nothing reliable is known of his later life. He is honored today as the first defender of the islands against Spain; the spelling Lapulapu was made official in 2021.
