He was the son of a peasant and a market vendor. At thirty-one he lost the use of his legs. Two years later he was carried in a hammock to the leader of the revolution, and became its mind. You are Apolinario Mabini.
Apolinario Mabini was born in Talaga, Tanauan, Batangas, on 23 July 1864, the son of a peasant and a market vendor. He studied on scholarships at San Juan de Letran and earned a law degree from the University of Santo Tomas in 1894. Polio left him paralyzed in 1896. In 1898 Emilio Aguinaldo summoned him, and men took turns carrying his hammock to Cavite. He became Aguinaldo’s chief adviser, wrote the decrees that organized the revolutionary government and his Decálogo, and in January 1899 became the first prime minister and foreign secretary of the First Philippine Republic. He resigned in May 1899 when the cabinet leaned toward accepting American rule. Captured by American troops in December 1899, he refused to swear allegiance to the United States and was exiled to Guam. He took the oath in February 1903 to come home, and died of cholera in Manila on 13 May 1903, aged 38.
