He never went to university. He sold canes and paper fans, carried messages for a British firm and acted on Tondo’s stages. Then he founded a secret society that would start the Philippine Revolution. You are Andrés Bonifacio.
Andrés Bonifacio was born in Tondo on 30 November 1863. Largely self-taught, he worked for foreign trading firms and was a founding member of Rizal’s La Liga Filipina. On the night of 7 July 1892, after Rizal’s arrest, he and others founded the Katipunan, which he led as Supremo from 1895. When the society was discovered in August 1896, its members tore up their cédulas and began the revolution. In Cavite the revolutionaries split; at the Tejeros Convention of 22 March 1897 Emilio Aguinaldo was elected president and Bonifacio declared the results void. Arrested by Aguinaldo’s men in April, he was tried by a revolutionary court for sedition and treason and executed with his brother Procopio in the mountains of Maragondon on 10 May 1897. He is honored as the Father of the Philippine Revolution; 30 November is a national holiday.
