Velu Nachiyar: history and tradition

After her husband was killed, Velu Nachiyar escaped with her daughter. Her return depended on rebuilding support while in exile. Supported by allies including Hyder Ali, she regained her kingdom around 1780. Her daughter Vellacci succeeded her around 1790.
