Rani Lakshmibai: history and tradition

After her husband’s death, the Company rejected the adopted heir’s succession. Jhansi was annexed under the Doctrine of Lapse. The uprising of 1857 placed Jhansi at the center of competing demands. Lakshmibai continued fighting after leaving Jhansi and died near Gwalior.
