Ashoka: history and tradition

Ashoka ruled the Mauryan Empire in the third century BCE. Ashoka’s rock edicts express remorse for the suffering caused by the conquest of Kalinga. Royal inscriptions promoted dhamma and concern for the welfare of subjects. Ashoka supported Buddhism; later Buddhist traditions add stories not established by his inscriptions.
